Gifted Program Appeals Process

Can I appeal a decision if my child is not identified for gifted services?

Yes. Families may request a review of a gifted identification decision if there is reason to believe the screening or evaluation results did not accuratey reflect their child's abilities.

When is an appeal appropriate?

An appeal may be submitted if one of the following circumstances exists:

  • New information is available that was not provided during the original screening or evaluation process.
  • A circumstance or condition affected your child's performance during screening or evaluation and was not previously shared.
  • You believe a circumstance or condition may have invalidated the screening or evaluation results.

How do I submit an appeal?

To request an appeal, submit a written letter to the Gifted Program Coordinator within 14 calendar days of receiving notification that your child was not identified for gifted services.

Your letter should include:

  • Your child's name and grade level
  • A description of the reason for the appeal
  • Any supporting documentation or information
  • Contact information for follow-up communication

What happens after I submit an appeal?

Once an appeal is received, Atlas Public Schools will convene a review committee to examine the information provided.

The committee may:

  • Review the student's screening and evaluation data
  • Consider any new information submitted by the family
  • Request additional information or documentation if needed

What decisions can the review committee make?

After reviewing all available information, the committee may:

  • Uphold the original determination and recommend participation in future screening opportunities
  • Authorize additional evaluation or testing if warranted by the information provided

How will I be notified of the decision?

The Gifted Program Coordinator will communicate the committee's decision directly to the parent or guardian after the review process is complete.

Is the committee's decision final?

Yes. The committee's decision following the appeal review process is final.
