Teaching at Atlas

At Atlas, we know that in order to have thriving students, we start by having thriving educators. That’s why we’re committed to supporting our team by providing an excellent educator experience. Through co-taught classrooms, two plan periods a day, one-on-one coaching, 30 days built into our calendar for strategic planning, and a strong base curriculum that is grounded in research, we’re committed to developing our team, giving them the tools they need to be successful, and pushing them to be the best teachers they can be for our students. It is serious work to be a teacher, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We remember that teachers are people too, with passions, hopes, dreams, and have their own needs that need to be met. We laugh, have fun, and work as a team to provide the best experience possible for our students and families.

What sets us apart

We are committed to developing our team by providing resources, structures, and creative autonomy that sets both teachers and students up for success.  Teachers play an invaluable role in our students’ trajectory, and it is our job to ensure that you have everything you need to be successful.

At Atlas, we encourage our teachers to work in cycles by giving them time to reflect and grow stronger.  As a year-round school, our academic year consists of seven academic sessions, each consisting of approximately five weeks of academic instruction, followed by a two week intersession. During each two week intersession, teachers are not working with children. Instead, the first week is spent planning strategically with our entire community of educators. This is a time for our team to learn from each other, interrogate the data,  practice our teaching craft, prepare for the upcoming academic session and bond as a team. After the week of Strategic Planning, our staff has the second week of intercession completely off to rest and refresh for the upcoming academic session.

These structures are designed to help ensure that each of our teachers have the skills and resources needed to be successful while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

teaching is a big job

Organization Overview:

Atlas is an intentionally diverse, year-round public elementary school that will open in St. Louis in the fall of 2021 for curious, creative, and compassionate kids.  Atlas’ mission is to educate the whole child by combining a rigorous academic program with real-world, place-based learning experiences so all students thrive in middle school, high school, and beyond.  Atlas’ academic program is designed to spark creative and critical thinking and engage students in challenging work that is connected across multiple disciplines.  Students will participate in authentic, hands-on experiences that are rooted in the local context of St. Louis.  As a result, Atlas students will produce beautiful work that is meaningful to them and their community.  Our year-round calendar gives students opportunities to participate in unique experiences that aren’t possible with a traditional school calendar.  All of this leads to students who are academically exceptional, passionate about learning, and truly prepared to thrive.
